Objective: To study simulation and design of chemical processes using computer with emphasis on interaction between design and control

Course Outline:
I. Basics (2wks)

B. MATLAB (Module 1)
II. Numerical Techniques (2 wks)
A. Algebraic & Nonlinear Equations
B. Numerical Integration
III. Modeling Using Computer (3 wks)
A. Basics
B. Steady-state simulation
C. Dynamics
IV. Steady-state design (including modeling) (4wks)
A. Reactors- CSTR, PFR
B. Separation Processes- binary, multi-component, azeotropic and reactive distillation
C. Heat Management
V. Interaction between design and control (4 wks)
A. Reactors
B. Separators
C. Heat Management
D. Entire plant

Homework and Project:
Homework (mostly computer related) problems will be assigned every other week. You have to work on at least one process in every aspects, steady-state design and dynamic control.

Examination and Presentation:
One mid-term examination will be given plus making a presentation of your project.

This is a comprehensive book on plantwide process control in which principles were given and many case studies were included. A well balanced book for plantwide control.
Constantinides, A.; Mostoufi, N. Numerical methods for Chemical Engineers with MATLAB Applications, Prentice-Hall: Upper Saddle River, 1999. (高立)
A typical book on numerical methods with many chemical engineering problems using MATLAB.
Luyben, W. L. Plantwide Dynamic Simulators in Chemical and Processing and Control, Marcel Dekker: New York, 2002.
Collect a lot of ASPEN/HYSYS examples which is a good source for choosing examples.
