課程目標 |
The purpose of this course is to develop the analytical modeling skill to derive closed-form solutions for certain mechanics problems. The modeling results can be used to identify the key parameters in controlling materials properties/performance and to provide guidelines in the material design. Mastering this skill, students can publish theoretical papers on mechanics of materials with ease. |
課程要求 |
The fundamentals of mechanics of materials will be reviewed. Special topics on the application of mechanics to model stresses in film/substrate, multilayer, and composite systems will be discussed. The physical meaning of the techniques used in solving the mechanics problems will be explored. Students will be asked to perform literature survey on topics of their interest,* deliver oral presentations, read assigned reading, and participate in discussions. For the final report, students are free to choose their own topics and are encouraged to apply mechanics to solve the related problems in their own research projects. Qualified ones will be edited and submitted to an ISI journal.
First week assigned reading:
C. H. Hsueh, “Thermal Stresses in Elastic Multilayer Systems,” Thin Solid Films, 418 [2] 182–188 (2002).
*Students are free to choose topics of their interest for literature survey and oral presentations. However, they are also encouraged to choose literature survey from 薛老師’s publication list, which can be found at the following link.

The topic for the oral presentation should be determined before April 14. All students should read the related papers prior to the oral presentation to facilitate their participation in the discussion.
