Course Name: Introduction to Ecological Engineering Methods
Credits: 3
Course Syllabus:
The objective of this course is to provide students a concise introduction to the subject of Ecological Engineering Methods (EEMs), which is a new and innovative concept in the field of civil engineering, especially in the areas of environmental engineering, water resources and hydraulic engineering, transportation, construction and infrastructure, etc. The goal of EEM implementation is not only to satisfy safety (e.g., natural hazard protection) demands, but also the need for protecting valuable ecosystems and aesthetic or landscape type of requirements. Since 2002, various governmental agencies have promoted the application of EEMs in engineering projects. In order to assure the EEMs are properly understood and implemented by professionals, the course is designed to cover items ranging from fundamental principles to real-world case examples of EEMs. Field trips to EEM sites and the practical aspects of EEM application will also be included. The ultimate goal of the course is to inspire students to learn more about this new engineering philosophy and the benefits of EEMs to the human society.
