Course Introduction:
This course introduces the basic theoretical framework of elastic waves and discusses the behavior and characteristics of elastic wave propagation in media of various shapes. Elastic waves are widely used in many engineering applications such as non-destructive inspection, geophysical study, medical ultrasonic imaging and physical acoustics.

Pre-requisites:
Elasticity (I), Applied Mathematics.

Syllables:
1. One dimensional wave motions
1-d wave equations, D`Alembert`s solution, wave and vibration, energy consideration, forced motion of an infinite rod (integral transform methods), reflection and transmission at boundaries, forced motion of a finite rod
2. Theory of elastodynamics
Uniqueness, reciprocity and representation theorem, Types of body waves and the governing equations, Wave motions due to body forces
3. Reflection and refraction of time harmonic waves
Reflection and refraction of SH wave, Energy flux and energy partition, Reflection and refraction of P and SV wave, Rayleigh surface wave, Inhomogeneous waves, phase shifts, and Stoneley wave
4. Time harmonic waves in elastic waveguide
SH waves in an infinite plate, Frequency spectrum of SH modes, Energy velocity and phase velocity, Love waves, P and SV waves in an infinite plate, Rayleigh-Lamb frequency spectrum
5. Transient Waves in an elastic half plane
