課程概述

This course is addressed to students who wish to understand research methodology of social science. “Social science” is commonly used as an overall term to refer to a plurality of fields outside of the natural science. Subjects such anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, linguistics, political science, international studies and, in some contexts, psychology, are all included in this umbrella. "Social research" encompasses the work of practitioners from various disciplines which share in its aims and methods. Various methods are employed to analyze an enormous volume of social phenomena; from census survey, to the in-depth interview of an experienced agent; from filed survey, to the investigation of ancient historical documents. Those research methods may be divided into two broad categories: quantitative designs and qualitative designs. Quantitative designs often rely on statistical analysis of many cases, approaching social phenomena through quantifiable evidence to create valid and reliable general claims. Qualitative designs emphasize understanding of social phenomena through direct observation, communication with participants, or analysis of texts. In this course, the instructor will introduce some of the recent developments in social science methodology in a readily accessible manner.
