課程概述

The lectures provide students the basics of molecular science and a guided tour of some modern-day applications.

Topics of the course include (1) Born-Oppenheimer approximation, (2) molecular structure, (3), difference of electronic, vibrational, and rotational transition, (3) molecular spectroscopy and selection rule, (4) equilibrium population and partition function, (5) transition state theory and rate coefficients, (6) application to solution phase studies, (7) applications of molecular science to atmospheric, astronomy and material fields.

Articles published in Physics Today, Science, Nature etc. that are written for a broad audience will be used as reading assignment to supplement the lectures. 

課程目標
The goal of this course is to provide students with basics of molecular science, details concerning molecular spectroscopies, and application in physics, chemistry, material science, astronomy and atmospheric studies. 
課程要求
We expect the students to have basic knowledge in classical and quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and electrodynamics. For example, we wish the students have studied Hamiltonian, Schrodinger equation, as well as Coulomb’s law. We also hope the students have a basic use of the following mathematical methods: vector calculus, complex-variable linear algebra, differential equation, and Fourier transformation.
