課程概述

"The Microbiome Universe " will guide students through the exploration of the diverse microbial ecosystems within the human body and the environment, as well as their significant impact on the Earth and human life, particularly in the areas of human health, the environment, and daily life. With advancements in science and technology, microbiome research has revealed how microbial communities in environments such as the gut, skin, soil, and oceans interact and influence ecosystems and human health. This course will cover a wide range of topics from basic concepts to everyday applications, including the relationship between gut microbiota and diseases, the role of microbiomes in ecology and industry, and their importance in sustainability, agriculture, and healthcare. It will also explore how microbes might shape our future lives. Students will gain insights into the significance of microbiomes in modern society through lectures, literature discussions, and the analysis of real-world case studies.

課程目標
1. Enhancing Scientific Literacy: Students will learn to understand and interpret scientific concepts related to microbiomes and will be able to apply these concepts to analyze everyday phenomena such as health, diet, and environmental changes.
2. Developing Critical Thinking Skills: Through discussions and analysis of microbiome-related cases in daily life, students will enhance their critical thinking abilities and learn to examine scientific information from different perspectives.
3. Promoting Interdisciplinary Learning and Application: Students will gain an understanding of the broad applications of microbiology in other fields, such as healthcare, environmental protection, and agricultural science, fostering their comprehension of interdisciplinary issues.
4. Fostering Interest in the Microbiome World: This course aims to spark students' curiosity about the microbiome world and help them recognize the profound impact this invisible world has on human society.

o Attendance Rate (30%) o Active involvement in class discussions and activities (10%)
2.
Research Assignment
60%
o Topic Selection: Students will choose a microbiome topic in the class, preferably one that aligns with their personal interests. They must formulate an answerable scientific question that explores the relationship between the microbiome and our world. o Literature Review: To answer their question, students are required to conduct a literature review using at least three original research articles published within the last three years. This ensures their work is based on the most up-to-date findings. o Written Report: Students will submit a written report (1500-2000 words) summarizing: (1) Their chosen scientific question. (2) The methods and findings from the reviewed literatures. (3) How the evidence answers their question or suggests new research directions. (4) A discussion on the potential implications of their findings in real-world contexts (e.g., health, agriculture, environment…etc).
