課程概述 |
In open water ecosystems, organisms and their interactions are influenced by physical processes that operate across various spatial scales. This course will explore these physical dynamics and their ecological and biogeochemical impacts , providing an integrated perspective on the mechanisms that drive biodiversity, species interactions, and nutrient cycling in open water ecosystems.
We will read and discuss physical processes ranging from small-scale phenomena like diurnal warming and vertical mixing to larger-scale dynamics such as upwelling, internal waves, and western boundary currents. The course will also focus on the ecological responses and biogeochemical processes that these physical forces influence, including biodiversity shifts, energy flows, nutrient cycling, and the functioning of the open water ecosystems.
Structured as a discussion-based course, students will engage with assigned readings, prepare presentations, and lead group discussions with guidance from instructors. Through this collaborative approach, students will deepen their understanding of the complex interactions in open water ecosystems.
