課程概述 |
This course intends to equip graduate students with fundamental skills of writing English for academic purposes. Topics to be covered include essential vocabulary in academic English, basic English sentence structures, and common patterns for English paragraph/essay writing. |
課程目標 |
Students will learn how to use online corpora with various concordancing functions for checking the collocation patterns of the vocabulary in Academic Word List and further make up sentences using the expressions. (CILO 1)
Students will analyze various aspects of English grammar by analyzing the journal articles in their own disciplines, devising their own generalizations and checking them against the accounts in the grammar textbooks. (CILO 2 and 3)
Students will write a group essay following a specific rhetorical mode based on common interests. Each student will be in charge of one paragraph and needs to cooperate to make the whole essay coherent in terms organization, content, and diction. (CILO 4)
Students will peer-review one another’s paragraphs/essays and give comments on the works with regard to word choice, grammar usage, and organization. (CILO 2 and 4) |

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
CILO 1: Demonstrate familiarities with vocabulary frequently used in academic discourse
CILO 2: Identify and edit their own sentence problems
CILO 3: Apply their knowledge of English grammar for writing purposes
CILO 4: Understand common rhetoric modes in English paragraph/essay writing |
