課程概述

Rivers represents important habitat types of river systems according to Ramsar Convention (Ramsar 1971). Rivers play a critical role in the global water cycle, and maintaining local, regional and global biodiversity, ecosystem processes, functions and services. Restoration and sustainable managemtn of rivers are our most significant challenges in this century and possibly the future generations, particularly in the face of ever-increasing demand on water and ecosystem services, and often diminishing water supply, degrading habitats and reducing biodiversity. To continue to function as ecosystem service providers, we need to understand local and global river ecosystems, impacts of various threats resulting human activities, and effective restoration and management stratigies based on the approaches of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

課程目標
–Develop an understanding of physio-chemical and ecological aspects of the river ecosystems;
–Explain the causes and consequences of human modification of rivers, and their implications for conservation of aquatic biodiversity and maintenance of human well being;
–Describe the techniques which may be used to quantify the status of (and monitor the changes in) rivers; and
–Introduce the range of restoration and copnservation strategies that can be used to reduce or mitigate human impacts on river ecosystems and maintain habitat quality and biodiversity
–Train students to develop abailities to analyze different practical problems and design the appropriate solutions on river conservation, restoration and management using extensive case studies.
