課程概述

The emerging field of nanotechnology has tremendous potential to improve our social and economic well-being, but there are still uncertainties about the human health and ecological risks associated with engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in the environment. Although the benefits of ENPs to various products and processes are well characterized, there are no specific regulations to deal with these novel substances and their potential environmental and health risks are not well understood.
This course provides a solid foundation in current methods for structural and chemical characterization of ENPs in environmental media, with a focus on aquatic environments. The fate and transport of ENPs is examined from colloid science and surface chemistry perspectives, considering factors that may be important at the nanoscale in determining ENP stability, mobility, and reactivity in natural or engineered aquatic systems. The course will discuss the ability of some ENPs to photocatalytically produce reactive oxygen species that may be desirable for removal of contaminants or undesirable as a potential toxicity risk. Technologies that use nanomaterials in water treatment processes and in situ groundwater remediation for removal of pollutants will be discussed. The last portion of the course will focus on methods for assessing ENP toxicity and recent research developments in the area of nanoecotoxicology.
 

課程目標
(1) Develop a background in colloid chemistry and nanotechnology necessary to understand the environmental impacts and environmental applications of nanomaterials.
(2) Learn fundamental concepts of key methods for nanomaterial characterization.
(3) Identify and quantitatively describe the mechanisms controlling the transport, aggregation and fate of nanomaterials in aquatic environments.
(4) Understand the mechanisms of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by nanomaterials
(5) Recognize the role of nanomaterials in the remediation of contaminated soils and waters, and in water treatment plant processes.
(6) Learn the methodologies used to assess nanomaterial toxicity and review current research efforts in the area of nanoecotoxicology.

Participation: Students are expected to participate in the discussion during presentations and ask questions. The class period should be interactive instead of simply a lecture. Students are required to attend each class and read hand-outs/material presented as primary course material.

Quizzes: At the end of each class period there will be a short, open note/paper quiz. The quizzes will cover the material from the previous lecture and one or two papers which will be part of the primary course material. All students are responsible for downloading this paper from the class web site and reading it before class.
