Survival is something every individual trying to achieve. Ironically, the death of subsets of cells is an essential part of the growth and development of many organisms. In plant, programmed-cell death (PCD) occurs in every developmental stage from germination of a seed to the death of a whole plant. Cell death is also induced when plant faces biotic or abiotic stresses. The understanding of cell death is, therefore, important for us to advance our knowledge on crop improvement. The course is designed for upper division or graduate students to learn the knowledge of PCD in plants and to compare plant PCD with animal PCD. Students will have opportunities to appreciate how living organisms utilized cell death for their survival. Students will also learn how to read a scientific journal and design experiments for specific questions.
