Information systems (and its underlying information technologies) have become indispensable components in the modern enterprises. Information systems (IS) are one of the major tools commonly adopted and employed in organizations for achieving operational excellence, supporting decision making, facilitating product/service development and improvements, enabling business innovations, and achieving and sustaining firms’ competitive advantages. In the digital economy, there is a tremendous demand for managers that can combine technical skills with business insights to create values for their firms using IS.
This course offers an overview of information systems (IS). It will discuss both technical and managerial issues related to IS. Fundamental concepts of IS, how they impact business firms, and how IT investment can be appraised will be discussed. Students will also be introduced to modern information technology infrastructure and core IS applications for businesses (including enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, customer relationship management, data analytics for decision support, and e-commerce). Finally, we will review and discuss some emerging IT innovations (e.g., knowledge management, sharing economy, social media analytics, and Internet of Things and their applications) essential in the digital economy. |
