課程概述

This course is designed to help students acquire basic knowledge of the Japanese business. During the first part of the course (before midterm examination), we will study the Japanese economy and the basic characteristics of the Japanese industrial and business organizations, such as the relationship between large enterprises and small and medium enterprises, business groups, corporate governance, and labor market. The second part of the course (after midterm examination) will introduce various Japanese companies to study the industrial structures and the mechanism of their performance. In addition, Japanese business models, such as the “lean production system” of Toyota Motor Corporation and the “ameba management” of Kyocera Corporation will be introduced in the second part.

This course intends to provide students an understanding of the following:
(1) transition of the Japanese economy,
(2) characteristics of the Japanese industrial and business organizations,
(3) Japanese business models, and
(4) present Japanese companies.
