課程概述

Doing business in the global context can be complex and daunting. This course introduces students to some of the key concepts to understanding global business, trade policy uncertainty, and global business practices with a focus on building corporate resilience. In Module 1, we start by considering the key macro-economic principles that aid business professionals in market identification. In Module 2, we recognize the importance of national and international institutions in governing trade and discuss some of the policy uncertainties that have arisen in recent years and their effects on business. In Module 3, we invite industry experts and foreign diplomatic and trade representatives to speak on doing business in different nations. Finally, in Module 4, we look at the importance of the global supply chain, contemporary concerns and the discussion surrounding supply chain relocation.

Key national and international policies that guide international trade.
Key national and international institutions that govern international trade.
Major (policy) issues affecting international trade.
Trade barriers.
Opportunities to build corporate resilience.

In this session we build an understanding of national-level marketplace indicators, key drivers of global business practice, and the stakeholders involved. It provides valuable insight into the global business landscape, empowering readers to make informed decisions. 
Week 2
3/2  Session 2: Reading Market Indicators

In this course session, we will cover important measurement systems of national welfare, including GDP, unemployment, and inequality, and explore what these indicators indicate, both positively and negatively. We will also discuss the interrelated indicators of taxation, inflation and interest and exchange rate systems and how it impacts the market environment.

3/9  Session 3: Interpreting Marketing Indicators into Business Strategy

This session will provide practical guidance for interpreting the concepts covered in previous classes, including how these characteristics enable the identification of high-, low-, and middle-income countries. We explore what this means for investment and market entry plans, and for business owners.

3/16  Session 4: Methods for analysing Markets + Class Activity: Studying a Prospective Market

In this session, we will cover methods for analyzing markets, including market research techniques and tools for evaluating market potential. We will use this to engage in a class activity focused on studying a prospective market.

3/23  Session 5: National Institutions and the Market

This course session will focus on national and local political economy, exploring how governments create value and the sources of uncertainty that arise from political and policy factors. We study the case of Brexit to provide context. 
Week 6
3/30  Session 6: International Institutions and the Market

In this session we look at the international level intuitions. We will discuss the role of regional trade blocs, such as the EU, NAFTA, SADC, and BRICS, in shaping economic outcomes and business practices. We also examine the ways in which international issues, such as tax agreements, sanction regimes, and trade disputes, are resolved through the WTO and World Bank mechanisms.

4/6  Session 7: Case Analysis: Analysing the Local, Regional and International Factors in the Café Clash (HBR Case)

In this course session, we will conduct a case analysis of the "Café Clash" Harvard Business Review case study, examining the local, regional, and international factors that contributed to the conflict. Through group discussions and analysis, students will gain insight into how the concepts in the previous sessions are combined to understand a globalized marketplace.

This course session will focus on strategies for managing uncertainty in the global supply chain. Specifically, we look into the supply chain relocation dialogue and the Chips Act.

4/27  Session 10: Strategies for Managing Uncertainty: The IPCC and G7 Economic Resiliency Dialogue

In this course session, we will focus on strategies for managing uncertainty in the face of climate change and global economic challenges, specifically through the IPCC and G7 Economic Resiliency Dialogue.

5/11  Session 12: The Chinese Business Environment and Culture

In this course session, we will focus on the business environment in China. We will examine the unique cultural and economic factors that shape business practices in China, including Chinese business culture, China's policy on the movement and trade of funds, and its changing policy on the tech industry and the impact of recent events.

5/18  Session 13: (5/18) The South-East Marketplace: Decoupling US-China Markets

As the ongoing disputes between the two largest economies in the world continues to intensify, many experts believe that a decoupling of their markets may be inevitable and lead to creation of a multipolar global order. This session will explore the potential consequences of such a decoupling.

In this course session, we will focus on the business environment in Southern Africa, with a specific focus on South Africa. We will examine the unique cultural and economic factors that shape business practices in the region.

In this course session, we will focus on the business environment in Taiwan and Israel. We will examine the unique cultural and economic factors that shape business practices in these regions and explore strategies for engaging with business leaders in both environments.
