隨著全球氣候易變,居家生態環境受到嚴重干擾,由於對環境生物的陌生和環境管理不良,以致於病媒嚴重孳生,近來已嚴重騷擾民眾日常生活,並且有疾病群聚感染的案例發生。台灣地處環熱帶圈的熱帶與亞熱帶區,氣候高溫高濕,極適合多類病媒繁殖,包括蚊、蠅、蚤、蜱、蝨、蟑螂和老鼠等。由於這些病媒會傳播病原體而威脅人類健康,甚至影響經濟動物的飼養和培育。此外,有些生活於居家環境的生物在生態上扮演分解者或初級消費者,雖然不至於引發疾病,但容易受到誤解而引發不必要的擔憂和騷動。透過課程的介紹,可以讓人類更加認識這些共生生物的特性和功能,並善用這些生物多樣性的資源。本課程透過主題課程介紹、實體標本觀察、環境標本採集和補充期刊選讀,讓同學了解居家環境生物與公共衛生的關係。

With the global climate change, the ecology of the living and household environment has been severely disrupted. Neglectance and the inappropriate utilization of resources have resulted in nuisance in daily life and outbreak of serious vector-borne infectious diseases. Taiwan is located between the tropical and subtropical region. Thus, the warm and humid environment are ideal for the infestation of disease vectors including mosquitoes, flies, fleas, ticks, lice, cockroaches and mice. The vectors not only transmit the human diseases but also threaten the veterinary public health and animal industry by impairing the breeding of livestock and the production of animal products. On the other hand, some of the symbionts in the household environment played an important role on ecological decomposition or primary consumers but not trigger the disease. Sometimes it is vulnerable to misunderstand and lead to unnecessary anxiety in daily life. Through the introduction of a series of lectures, it will lead to the better understanding of these symbiotic organisms and their roles in the ecosystem, and even the application of such diverse resources. This course includes the lectures with specific topics, the practical observation of vector specimen, collection of the specimen in the field and the reading of supplementary literatures. Students are expected to understand the relationship between the pests or symbionts in the household environment and correlate to issues of public health.

The goal of this course is to establish the awareness of the symbiont and pests in the household and living environment. Through the lectures and the training in the identification and classification of specimen and the specimen collection in the field, students can redraw their image of symbiont in their living environment. Moreover, students will have the motivations to manage the sources in the surrounding environment in order to promote environmental health and to reduce vector-borne infections diseases actively.
