課程概述

Intended for master’s students who have completed the course in research methods in social and behavioral sciences, this course is designed to equip students with the abilities to conduct a literature review and synthesize empirical evidence. Students will hone their skills of critical appraisal through presentations, comments, and discussions in class. This course will provide students with opportunities to search for their research interests and identify a potential topic for their thesis research.

課程目標

After completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify the key socio-behavioral and community factors that affect the health of individuals and populations (HBCS-A)
2. Describe the basic theories, concepts, and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines that are used in public health research and practice (HBCS-B)
3. Analyze domestic and international issues about health and environment from a socio-behavioral perspective (HBCS-E)
4. Search for, synthesize, and critically appraise the literature
5. Give oral presentations, make comments, and respond to question
6. Prepare a report summarizing and commenting on the literature reviewed.

課程要求

Students are required to:
1. Present two oral presentations regarding the peer-reviewed articles of their choice.
- Students need to identify the literature of interest and give a 20-min oral presentation summarizing and criticizing the peer-reviewed articles identified
- The literature reviewed should be related to the areas of health behaviors, community, or social sciences.
- The presenter should email a soft copy of the literature to all the instructors and students by Friday in the week before the class.
- The presentation slides should be uploaded to the NTU COOL by the day of the class.

2. Deliver two discussant presentations.
- Students need to give comments and questions on the presented articles.
- The discussant presentation time should be within 8 minutes.
- The presentation slides should be uploaded to the NTU COOL by the day of the class.

3. Serve as the moderator: Students will take turns serving as the moderator of the seminar in each week. The moderator is responsible for holding participants to time limits and facilitating the discussions.

4. Final literature review report: in the report, students need to summarize the literature reviewed in this course and respond to feedback from other students and the instructors. The students should also explain how the literature reviewed will inform their future research projects, such as identifying the knowledge gap or providing guides for analytical approaches. The report should be 2–3 pages (double spaced) and uploaded to the NTU COOL by 11:59pm on 2023/06/16 (Friday).
