課程概述

Biochip is one of the most prosperous fields in the biotech industry in recent years. There are two major new biochip technologies in the biotech industry, namely, lab-on-a-chip (“LOAC”) and microarray technology. Microarray technology applied gene-based techniques to high-throughput screening and monitoring as well as functional studies. An array is an orderly arrangement of DNA segments (or other biologic samples) affixed to the substrate. It provides a medium for matching known and unknown DNA samples based on base-pairing rules and automating the process of identifying the unknowns. Microarrays require specialized robotics and imaging equipment which are commercially available but limited and costly. This technology enables to monitor the whole genome on a single chip so that researchers can have a better picture of the interactions among thousands of genes simultaneously. Upon completion of the human genome, microarray technology plays a very important role in the post-genomic era, because of its high throughput and robustness. This course will be covering the following topics.

1. Introduction of biochip technologies
2. Basic Concepts of biochemistry and molecular biology
3. Microarray production
4. Microarray Detection
5. Microarray Informatics
6. Biomedical applications of microarrays
