課程概述 |
This course is designed for students with a science/engineering background to learn fundamentals of bioengineering and frontiers of biotechnology. This course begins from the topics regarding bioengineering: material balance in biological systems, rates and kinetics overview of bioreactors, continuous culture, and oxygen transfer in bioreactors. And then to the hottest topics in biotechnology in the latter half of the semester. These topics are: enzyme technology, recombinant proteins, metabolic engineering, genome and genomic technology, cell culture processes, synthetic biotechnology, and stem cell technology. Finally, students are grouped (2-3 persons/group) to prepare a presentation of their special project for summarization of what they have learned in this course. |
課程目標 |
The objective of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive and concise overview of engineering principles applying to biotechnological processes with an emphases on stoichiometric and kinetic analysis and quantitative synthesis of biological knowledge, and the recent developed key issues in biotechnology. |
課程要求 |
Students are expected to have had biochemistry or microbiology or cell biology, and concept of differential equations, or are at senior undergraduate or graduate levels. |
