課程概述 |
The goal of this discussion-based course, intended primarily for graduate students and upper-level undergraduate students, is to develop a historical perspective to better understand current issues in community ecology and related fields (e.g., population, ecosystem, and landscape ecology). To this end, students will present and discuss classic papers and related contemporary papers. As the papers included in this course are often textbooks examples of key ecological concepts, students are often aware of the narrative of the papers. However, this course is unique in that we will guide students to finally read these papers that most people cite but had never actually read. Students will also present and discuss their own research interests in relation to foundational concepts. |
|
課程目標 |
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Use knowledge of classic papers to identify new research questions that are fundamental to the further development of community ecology
2. Lead and participate in scientific discussions to collaboratively achieve the goal above
3. Place their own community ecology research in the relevant historical context in their presentation of their work |
|
課程要求 |
Students are required to read the foundational papers before class and be compared to participate in discussion. We will plan the course as follows.
Before the class
1. Before Monday, everyone will finish reading the assigned paper(s) and submit their answers to the following questions for each paper in NTU Cool
a. Which paragraph do you find most interesting or illuminating?
b. Which paragraph do you find most confusing or unclear?
c. What open-ended question relating to the papers would you pose to the class for discussion?
2. Discussion leaders (each student will lead discussion in 1-2 sessions)
a. Prepare a 20-min presentation about the historical context and contemporary relevance of the papers (Po-Ju can suggest supplementary readings to prepare for this presentation)
b. Make 3 discussion questions based on the answers submitted by everyone
In the class
30 min – Presentation by discussion leader
10 min – Follow up by Po-Ju
20 min – Q&A for clarification
30 min – Group discussion on the 3 questions from the discussion leader
30 min – Class discussion led by the discussion leader |
