課程概述

The course is a detailed introduction to the complicated landscape of scientific publishing. We will discuss different aspects of it, starting by introducing the overall workflow by authors, editors, reviewers and publishers, and follow by individual steps from searching, organizing, writing and reviewing the scientific papers. In addition to scientific manuscripts, we will focus also on writing grant or scholarship proposals and preparing for presentation of poster or oral talk at scientific conferences. We will take also a couple of selected ecological papers, good and bad, and deconstruct them into details, pointing out writing skills and habits. Finally, we will also discuss latest involvement of artificial intelligence (such as ChatGPT) in academic writing, and also how to recognize and avoid plagiarism.

課程目標
This course is not “learn how to write your Master’s thesis” class. It goes well beyond simple writing of the manuscript, and aims to equip students with more detailed philosophy of the whole academic publication process and understanding of relevant context. In each class, students will also practice individual steps, either individually or in group settings, or as homework assignments. We will also discuss pros and cons of different publication practices, with aim to understand why things are done in the way they are done.
