課程概述

This course is designed to provide a basic orientation to the field of social psychology – the scientific study of the way people think, feel, and behave in social situations. Students will learn about key concepts and theories in social psychology and use them to analyze and better understand every-day social phenomena. We will also discuss the perspectives and methods commonly applied in scientific research on social influence and interaction. Specific topics to be covered include self-concept, social judgment, attitudes, persuasion, conformity, aggression, prosocial behavior, prejudice, and interpersonal relationships.

課程目標
This course will introduce students to the social psychological approach to understanding human behavior. Students will learn about the basic domains of social psychology, as well as the fundamental theoretical and methodological approaches used by social psychologists.
課程要求
◎ Lectures:Attendance and Class Participation ◎
Lectures will be given each week during the regularly scheduled class meeting time. You are strongly encouraged to attend all lectures and actively participate in class discussions. Attendance and participation during lectures are essential to your success in this course. Exam questions will be based on materials covered in lecture, as well as materials from your readings. There may be some overlap between lectures and readings, but lectures will also cover materials that are not discussed in the readings. Although PowerPoint slides will be posted to the course website for your convenience, these will not be detailed enough to study from on their own. You should take your own notes during class to help you study.
Attendance will not be directly taken during lecture (e.g., by calling each of your names). However, your attendance will be checked indirectly by submission of in-class activity sheets. You will earn 5 points toward your course grade each week by participating in various in-class activities. Format of the in-class activities will vary and may include small group discussions, questionnaires, or short writing assignments. Whether the activity is to be done individually or in small groups, you will complete and submit an in-class activity sheet with your name on it every week.

◎ Readings ◎
Except for the first class, you are required to read all assigned materials prior to the class for which it is assigned. Class lecture and activities will be based on the assumption that you have read all of the assigned materials. A schedule of assigned readings appears on p. 5 of this syllabus.

◎ Weekly Assignments ◎
Each week, you will have the opportunity to earn up to 5 points towards your course grade by completing a weekly assignment. These weekly assignments are designed to elaborate and expand upon concepts presented in lecture or in your textbook. The assignments may ask you to either answer a set of multiple-choice questions or provide short answers to a list of questions related to that week’s topic.
